Any one else had their tax credits stopped due to overpayments from years ago?

i am a student single parent, and had just got used to budgeting on income support and child tax credit when one monday went to my bank and found my tax credits had not gone in. turns out that they were stopping them until april new tax year as they had made a three thousand pound over payment back in 2005. when i begged and pleaded with them, they told me to go to an advice centre. this over payment it seams was around the time i first started claiming after the birth of my daughter and returning to work part time. i asked them how and why there was an overpayment and they said it was due to an overpayment in working tax credit. i then reminded them i was on income support and the woman said, %26quot;oh, you are?%26quot; i replied, %26quot;yes, i told you a month ago when i started claiming income support and stopped working.%26quot; she said, %26quot;well, we have paid all you claim for this tax year, you%26#039;ll have to get a crisis loan if you cant manage.%26quot;

any one else want to kill the tax credits system?

it happened to my bro who doesnt earn much and is now struggling. Its ridiculous how are you supposed to know you are paying too much if they cant even work it out properly? Surely if they make the mistake people shouldnt have to pay it back. On the other hand ive heard of people who abuse the system to get free dental treatment etc and arent entitled but they seem to get away with it!

Not personally, but I have had a couple of friends this has happened to recently. Last I heard they were appealing the decision.

They are ready to explode with frustration over the matter.

You know what it%26#039;s like though, you can never win!

the whole tax credit system drives me mad!i%26#039;m self employed and work full time,my hubby works full time too.we are told that if your household earns up to 50,000 you can claim.rubbish.every penny they have paid us, we have had to pay back due to overpayments.we were only getting 鎷?5 a month but they worked out what we got on the figures WE gave THEM from hubbys P45 and my tax return-so why do we get penalised if they work it out wrong? in the end, when we got our form to fill in last year we returned it blank with a big note saying %26#039;we no longer want to claim this as we cannot afford to keep paying it back%26#039;.that was last summer-and just before xmas we got a bill for 鎷?47 that was overpaid to us from 2005!!againsy my hubbys better judgement i paid it cos then they can never say that we owe them.we wont be claiming it this year either-its too much hassle!!

  1. Hello

    I'm working on a story about tax credit overpayments for the BBC. Would you be interested in speaking to me?
