If I take a part-time (more than 16 hrs) job I have been offered and apply for tax/child tax credits straight away, how long does it take to be sorted out and first payments made? Many thanks. This would be my first ever application.

within 30 days, if it takes longer than that then call the helpline for progress. they get it on their system within a week, so you could always check for progress every week. if it gets held up (an answer is missing or needs checking) then it takes ages for the system to pick up on it and send a letter to you. but if you ring the helpline every week they can look at ur application and correct anything missing there and then.

Usually it is sorted in a couple of weeks, with any due payment received a week later.

They are normally quite quick other than around the end of the tax year and beginning of the next tax year.

Just ensure that you either give the exact amount you could earn or over estimate the money you will earn, failure to do this can result in you owing them money for over payments.

i get them - they are pretty quick within a couple of weeks you can claim back any childcare costs as well

i applyed for child tax credits when i got married and got a p/t job, although we couldnt get the working element as we are earning too much a year. if u r a single mother then you will get both. it took them 8 weeks to sort it out but i did keep ringing them to see if they had enough info as that can delay a claim. 8 weeks later i recieved my payment with backpay from the date that i applyed for it.
