Really important tax questions..........?

My husband and I just had a baby in april and I am wondering how to file taxes.

Do I file for the earned income credit?

the child tax credit?

both?

How does this work? I am not sure because I havent had to do it yet but we are suffering and I need to get my taxes done sooner.

Also when is the soonest I can file taxes? Do I have to wait to get our 3 w2 forms from work or can h%26amp;r block use our paystubs? Ive got every one of those since January 1st.

Thanks for the help. Please email all replies to me at blue2cry@hotmail.com

as I am not sure if I will be able to check back on here as easy as I check my email.

Really important tax questions..........?

You and your husband should file a joint return, claiming yourselves and the baby. You will get an exemption of $3400 for the baby 閳?that means that amount is subtracted from your total income before tax is figured. Then after you figure your tax, you閳ユ獟l also get a $1000 child tax credit 閳?that amount is subtracted directly from your taxes. It can only take your tax to zero, you don閳ユ獩 get any leftover amount back if you don閳ユ獩 owe that much.

Eligibility for Earned Income Credit depends on your earned income. If the total of all of your W-2s is under $35,241 for the year, then you閳ユ獟l get something for EIC, if it閳ユ獨 over, you don閳ユ獩 qualify. How much you get depends on your income.

The child tax credit and the EIC are independent of each other, so getting one doesn閳ユ獩 change your eligibility for getting the other one also.

You, or H%26amp;R Block, can閳ユ獩 actually file until you have all of your W-2閳ユ獨. They might do the paperwork from your pay stubs, but aren閳ユ獩 allowed to actually send in to the IRS. Efile, and have your refund direct deposited into your bank account, and you閳ユ獟l get it within two weeks of when it閳ユ獨 submitted.

Really important tax questions..........?

1. Wait until you get your 3 W-2s to file.

2. Have the preparer do your taxes both ways. MFJ should result in the highest refund for the two of you.

If your combined earned income is less than $36K, then you are possibly eligible for EIC. The child tax credit is $1000. First you use this to reduce your tax bill. If there is any left over and your combined earned income is more than 11-12,000, you may also get the rest back as an Additional Child tax credit.

3. No, you don%26#039;t get private email service.

EIC on tax return?

We just had a child in August will we get EIC on our tax return if our income for the year qualifies? Do we get any extra credtis for having a child other than the child tax credit. How much could our EIC potentially be?

EIC on tax return?

It%26#039;s possible. You must have earned income and your AGI must be less than:

$36,348 ($38,348 married filing jointly) with two or more qualifying children;

$32,001 ($34,001 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child; $12,120 ($14,120 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children.

The maximum EIC credit is:

$4,536 with two or more qualifying children;

$2,747 with one qualifying child;

$412 with no qualifying children.

The EIC is based on your earned income. Since you didn%26#039;t disclose that information, you%26#039;ll need to refer to the IRS website or your 1040 tax booklet.

You might also be eligible for the Additional Child Tax Credit.

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

I am a single mother of an autistic 8 year old girl and her father has had nothing to do with her since she was born. When we went to child support court July 2005 the Judge told me that the only way that he was going to allow her father to pay $50 more a month is that he claims our child on income tax as long as he is current on child support. My question is this he is current this year and can claim her on his taxes, is he going to be able to collect EIC or child tax credit?

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

Don%26#039;t take the extra $50. It isn%26#039;t worth the $2000 or so you get refunded during tax season. He sounds like an a$$ to me. My co-worker who has 4 children with the same guy only gets $25 a month for each child, and he makes 4x the amount of money she does. And he VERY RARELY sees the kids, only when he absolutley has to. how he gets away with this?? I have noooo idea. Karma will catch up to these men though, youll see. Just hang in there.

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

Unfortunently, yes, if his income falls in the allowable ranges.

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

That sounds so crazy to me! Have you consulted with an attorney?? I have went thru the same thing as you with the child support issue and they never brought up taxes. My kids dad pays the support and I still claim them as it should be since I have them 90% of the time! Maybe it%26#039;s because you make alot more than him?? Is that possible? If not, then I wouldn%26#039;t get why a man who disregards his child would be able to do that. I know that in California it asks you when you do your taxes if that child lives with you at least 50% of the time when you try to claim them. He would obviously need to answer no! what a lame person he sounds..

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

If your child lives with you and not with her dad for over half the year, then YOU can still claim EIC for her if you have income in the required range even if HE claims her as a dependent. He will get the child tax credit though.

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

If his adjusted gross incomes falls under 39,000 then he will definitely, and unfortunately get the EIC for your child. Maybe you can work it out where he files your daughter just for dependancy, and you file the EIC

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

All of the credits follow the dependency. You lost a lot more than $50 per month.

How can a father claim a child as a dependent if he has nothing to so with child?

Only the custodial parent can claim the EIC and head of household filing status. File your taxes letting the preparer know she lives with you and he is only getting to claim her due to a court order. He will get the exemption and child tax credit. You can get EIC, hoh and child and dependent care credit.

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

Did you know that some people get money back in taxes that they never paid in? For example, if you owe $0 in taxes for the year because of applying credits, you can sometimes still get a refund?

The way it works is through %26quot;refundable%26quot; credits, the EIC and the Additional Child Tax Credit.

So there are a lot of poor people being subsidized by the government (and I%26#039;m one of them, actually, I start work in January).

Don%26#039;t tell the liberals, but Bush actually expanded this program!

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

In 1962, Milton Friedman.

It%26#039;s a very liberal program and probably for a good cause. I wouldn%26#039;t say that program is big government overkill like free health care or free 401k matching, or free baby bonds.

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

French fries.

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

I have a cousin who has been on disability (because apparently laziness and a lack of desire to work is a %26quot;disability%26quot; in the state he lives in) who gets $3,500 back in taxes every year.

I think it%26#039;s disgusting. Thanks for telling me Bush is responsible for it. Now I have another reason to think he%26#039;s an incompetent fool.

(Like I needed one.)

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

EIC was started by a coalition of Reagen and a Democratic Congress in the %26#039;80%26#039;s and has been highly successfuly in making work worthwhile for the working poor. yes, Bush expanded the ACTC-good for him.

I can%26#039;t imagine anyone seriously criticizing a programs that encourage people to work and which move them toward a %26quot;living%26quot; wage, which they are not receiving despite working full time.

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

Bush is a liberal. Neo-cons are neither conservative or Republican.

Who invented the income tax welfare program?

Bush expanded tax rebates and corporate welfare even more.

There are more corporations that are doing this than poor people. Corporations like Disney, GE, Verizon, McDonnel Douglas, and At%26amp;t pay virtually nothing in taxes, but they get millions of dollars back. They get alot more paid to them in taxes than anyone on these boards including you.

The following are excerpts from the two sources listed below:

Eighty-two of the 275 companies, almost a

third of the total, paid zero or less in federal

income taxes in at least one year from 2001 to

2003. In the years they paid no income tax,

these companies earned $102 billion in pretax

U.S. profits. But instead of paying $35.6 billion

in income taxes as the statutory 35 percent

corporate tax rate seems to require, these companies

generated so many excess tax breaks that they received outright tax rebate checks from

the U.S. Treasury, totaling $12.6 billion (see box). These companies閳?閳ユ笜egative tax rates閳?meant

that they made more after taxes than before taxes in those no-tax years.

Twenty-eight corporations enjoyed negative federal income tax rates over the entire 2001-03

period. These companies, whose pretax U.S. profits totaled $44.9 billion over the three years,

included, among others: Pepco Holdings (閳?9.6% tax rate), Prudential Financial (閳?6.2%), ITT

Industries (閳?2.3%), Boeing (閳?8.8%), Unisys (閳?6.0%), Fluor (閳?.2%) and CSX (閳?.5%), the

company previously headed by our current Secretary of the Treasury.

In 2003 alone, 46 companies paid zero or less in federal income taxes. These 46 companies,

one out of six of the companies in the study, told their shareholders they earned U.S. pretax

profits in 2003 of $42.6 billion, yet they received tax rebates totaling $5.4 billion. Almost as

many companies, 42, paid no tax in 2002, reporting $43.5 billion in pretax profits, yet

receiving $4.9 billion in tax rebates. From 2001 to 2003, the number of no-tax companies

jumped from 33 to 46, an increase of 40 percent.

Any individual who paid taxes provides more money to run the government than these untaxed firms, says Barry Piatt, spokesman for Sen. Byron Dorgan (D) of North Dakota, who, with Sen. Carl Levin (D) of Michigan requested the study months ago. Next time Congress considers taxation, Senator Dorgan will be hammering at the legal %26quot;massive tax avoidance%26quot; by companies, promises Mr. Piatt.

For years, companies and their representatives, such as the National Association of Manufacturers, have complained that businesses are overtaxed. The latest studies of corporate taxation suggest that, in general, this is not true. %26quot;The usual arguments may be baloney,%26quot; says Piatt.

The GAO study found that 71 percent of foreign-controlled corporations operating in the United States paid no taxes in those five years; nor did 61 percent of US-controlled companies.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush's tax cuts for the deficit?

... and say the tax cuts favored the rich when it fact the biggest tax rate cuts were on the bottom. 15% to 10% = 5% The top bracket only went from 36.5% to 35% = 1.5%. I agree it%26#039;s more for the rich in dollar amounts but it was part of a stratagy to phase in a flat tax wich includes raising the standard deduction so the POOR WOULN%26#039;T PAY ANY income tax. but because of the knee jerk reaction of liberals it wasn%26#039;t continued. The inbalance cant be blamed on Bush anyway because its been that way for over 40 years. What did the Dems do about it all the times they were in power? Bush%26#039;s tax plan got rid of a lot of tax breaks that favored the rich like business meals and limo%26#039;s. His plan also implemented new tax breaks for teachers, so they could take the standard deduction and still deduct their teaching supplys, and raised the doubled the child tax credit. If Al Gore had his way the bottom tax rate would still be 15% instead of 10%.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Because they have never taken an economics class or looked up the actual data or GAO reports. They dont understand that you can increase federal tax revenues by taking less income tax. They operate on the principal that to have more, you must take more. Besides, never let it be said that a democrat let the facts interfere with their opinion.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Because they know nothing about economics.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Easy...Dems blame out of habit.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

They just parrot what CNN tells them.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Because bush did cause the deficit

And his cuts were heavily skewered toward the rich

And also the war, which is costing craploads of money

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

I don%26#039;t blame the tax cuts. I blame his war, his inept diplomatic policies and his incompetent trade policies for the deficit.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Neocons love to argue that tax cuts will bring in more revenue through taxes. That%26#039;s like saying, %26quot;let%26#039;s sell our product at a loss because we%26#039;ll make up for it in volume.%26quot; It%26#039;s a fantasy that doesn%26#039;t work in the real world.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

%26quot;..part of a strategy to phase in a flat tax.%26quot;

oh my God is that B.S. !

are you laughing your a*s off when you lie like that ?

guys like you have No regard for the truth.

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Got some bad ,uh, facts here:

%26quot;inbalance can%26#039;t be blamed on Bush anyway because its been that way for over 40 years.%26quot;

Wrong. Surpluses are not unknown in US history...the last one was from 1997-2001. Clinton managed to erode deficit spending to zero then incurred surpluses.

Generally speaking, the supply-side vs demand-side argument in terms of economic stimulus is a fruitless one. Its like trying to prove which %26quot;arm%26quot; of the scissors cuts...the top or bottom? Fruitless.

Here%26#039;s a bonus question. What world-famous economist originally said my scissors paraphrase?

Why do Liberals Blame George Bush%26#039;s tax cuts for the deficit?

Because if you are spending the same (or more), and taking in less, you will have less. which is what we have. Now granted any tax, including sales tax, essentially goes to the government. So in theory, if you let people have more of the money they earn, they will spend more of it, and then the taxes you collect there will make up for it. But things only work out that way if people are overwhelmingly confident in the general economy. And few people are. Now part of that is due to the media. But it%26#039;s also due to actual real-world experiences. You can%26#039;t say the economy is fine if a mother can%26#039;t afford to buy bread and milk, for example. Or rather, you can say that til you are blue in the face, but it%26#039;s not going to change the experience of the people who are struggling to make ends meet.

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

If I take a part-time (more than 16 hrs) job I have been offered and apply for tax/child tax credits straight away, how long does it take to be sorted out and first payments made? Many thanks. This would be my first ever application.

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

within 30 days, if it takes longer than that then call the helpline for progress. they get it on their system within a week, so you could always check for progress every week. if it gets held up (an answer is missing or needs checking) then it takes ages for the system to pick up on it and send a letter to you. but if you ring the helpline every week they can look at ur application and correct anything missing there and then.

I used to work on the tax credit helpline.

they base your claim on an estimate of what you expect to earn for the rest of this tax year.

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

Usually it is sorted in a couple of weeks, with any due payment received a week later.

They are normally quite quick other than around the end of the tax year and beginning of the next tax year.

Just ensure that you either give the exact amount you could earn or over estimate the money you will earn, failure to do this can result in you owing them money for over payments.

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

They are really efficient, it will be sorted in a few weeks at the most.

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

tax credits are a pain i thought they took the amount you earnt from the previous year i may be wrong

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

i get them - they are pretty quick within a couple of weeks you can claim back any childcare costs as well

congratulations and good luck with your new job

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

i applyed for child tax credits when i got married and got a p/t job, although we couldnt get the working element as we are earning too much a year. if u r a single mother then you will get both. it took them 8 weeks to sort it out but i did keep ringing them to see if they had enough info as that can delay a claim. 8 weeks later i recieved my payment with backpay from the date that i applyed for it.

hope this helps

Tax Credits - How long do they take?

You can apply straight away!

If you go to your local jobcentre plus, they%26#039;ll help you complete the forms and you should have your tax credits within 2/3 weeks!

Congrats on the new job!

Tax money??

Ok so my last question was not thorough enough... Here it is again. My husband made $3100 income last year. They only took $4 for FICA. Today we filed and we get $47 back. We have 3 children under 17 that we claimed and no idea why we do not qualify for the child tax credit which would give us a higher return. Last year, I made less and paid in less but still got back over $4000. So is this bonis check this year affecting my return? Why aren%26#039;t we getting more back this year? I was unable to work and I have a disabled son on SSI, are there any loopholes I can use to get more money back?

Tax money??

With only $3,100 in income for the year you don%26#039;t owe any Federal income tax. Any that was withheld would have been refunded. You may be eligible for the EIC and should have received something for that -- double check your tax return as $47 does not sound right. You should have receive something like $1,250 for the EIC if you%26#039;re eligible.

(And $4.00 for FICA isn%26#039;t right on income of $3,100 either, not that that has anything to do with your income tax.)

As to the stimulus plan rebates, you have more than $3,000 in qualifying income so you should receive something there as well, up to $1,500 possibly.

See the link to the stimulus plan rebates on the top of the IRS home page at http://www.irs.gov

Tax money??

TFTP Report It

Tax money??

Well first if your husband made $3100 and only had $4 dollars of FICA withheld then the company is going to have a major problem. They should have withheld around $237.

Now comes the question...do you know what FICA is? It is basically Social Security Tax...and has very little if any thing to do with Income Tax. I think you mean that they withheld $4 of income tax.

Now to the child tax credit....that is not a refundable credit...it simply lowers your tax liability. However, if you income is large enough...the %26quot;Child Tax Credit%26quot; will rollover to the %26quot;Additional Child Tax Credit%26quot; and the latter is a refundable credit. However, $3100 in taxable income isn%26#039;t gonna to get you there.

It seems to me that you husband had $4 withheld in taxes and your getting $43 dollars in EIC.

Hope this helps

Tax money??

You didn%26#039;t qualify for the child tax credit because your income was too low. (You will apparently qualify for $1500 from the stimulus package.)

Apparently your husband had self employment income and any eic went to pay the SE taxes. (It also sounds like he paid to have a preparer do the taxes.)

Tax money??

The rebate check is not effecting your refund. It is completely separate.

How did you file? With the Child Tax Credit, you can only get back what you paid in tax. However, you should be eligible for the additional child tax credit due to your income. Then you can be refunded more than you paid. That%26#039;s what may have happened last year.
