Tax Credits -- No award letters for more than a year? Then was told there was an overpayment!?

We are claiming child tax and working tax credits in the UK since 2004. But we have not received a single award letter from HMRC since January 2006. We still receive weekly payments. Ask them for letters, they admittede having problems sending them out. Then at the end of tax year, we discovered we are being paid less than should be. Call them. Were told there was an overpayment from the year before, and money is being deducted each week till July 2007. We knew nothing about it for the entire year! We redid the calculations. There should be no overpayment. We gave them the estimate increase in salary at the beginning of the tax year, so they adjusted the money accordingly for the whole year. At end of year, the actual income was about 鎷?00 less than the estimate. We completed the annual review pack. Then now there is an overpayment of more than 鎷?500! WAIT: the actual income was LESS than the estimate for the year!!! So why overpayment? Called. Got no straight answer!

If you are sure of your figures...Stick to your guns. Reply to their letters with the same figures and other information each time they contact you.

I did this for over 2 years when they said that I owed them over 鎷?00. In the end they saw sense and stopped bothering me.

The main thing is to communicate with them...Writing to them is better than calling. That way you get a reply which may even help your case. Most people working there don%26#039;t know what they are doing...They don%26#039;t even refer to the last letter that was sent to you.

Good luck

There was an item about this on the news this morning. They have apparently miscalculated thousands of claims, it is a real mess.

Try looking at the news section on the BBC website for more information.

This is exactly what has happened to me. I have had no paperwork from them, they are now saying that i have been overpayed (again - this has happened before). I keep ringing them and they are saying they are experiencing problems sending out the award notices. How can i tell if i have been overpaid if i havent recieved any award notices for a year. I have changed my childminder and my payments to the childminder has changed twice also, i have rang them and told them on each occasion. I dont know where i am with it all. I totally understand what you are talking about. They are a mess.

these peolpe r normally quite good,

ask them 2 re assess or appeal against the decision,

i%26#039;ve always been lucky when ever i%26#039;ve questioned thier decision they re calculate, when ever we have change in income i always phone them so it is on their system then, as soon as the p60 comes in i phone them, they often go on estimated figures til they get the actual figures, go through all your paper work then phone them with all the figures for the years or write to them, sounds a lot of hassle but its worth it

good luck
